Sainsbury's Erdington

In 2011, Sainsbury’s unveiled its plans to develop the site where the Collier Motor Group and Honeywell House, Birmingham City Council’s administrative offices, are situated.

Following two public consultations, Sainsbury’s submitted its planning application.

In response to concerns raised by nearby residents to the original proposals, Sainsbury’s moved the service yard access to Sutton Road, set back the development away from adjacent residential properties, reduced the height of the development, and added more trees and shrubs to help screen the development and soften its appearance.

The submitted plans feature further amendments in addition to those made to the original proposals. The service yard ramp is now covered to reduce noise, and barriers have been added which will be locked when the store car park and service yard ramp are not in use. The plans also include:

  • A Sainsbury’s store, with a sales area of 4,658 sq m
  • A car park on top of the store, with 383 spaces and accessible from Sutton Road
  • Three independent retail units
  • 15 three-bedroom residential properties, each with its own parking
  • A public square facing Orphanage Road and Edwards Road
  • New trees, shrubs and planting
  • Relocation of the existing signalised crossing on Sutton Road to provide a safe pedestrian link to the store
  • Improvements for pedestrians at the junction between Edwards Road and Orphanage Road
  • Utilisation of existing pedestrian links between Erdington High Street and the development

Application approved

Birmingham City Council Planning Committee has approved the redevelopment plans.

Our next step is to work with Colliers to progress on the details of their plans to relocate to Tyburn Road.

We will update the local community in due course.
